San Juan is Puerto Rico's capital and largest city, on the north coast. The two main areas for travelers are Old San Juan (the colonial walled city, with the cobblestone streets and the two big forts) and Condado/Isla Verde (the beach hotel strip, 15 minutes east). Most walking tours leave from the Plaza de Armas in Old San Juan and visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro (built 1539), Castillo San Cristóbal, and the Catedral de San Juan Bautista.
If you have one day, the standard pattern is a 2-hour Old San Juan walking tour in the morning, lunch on Calle Fortaleza or San Sebastián, and an afternoon at Condado Beach.
