17 Best Things to Do in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
Aguadilla is the northwest corner of Puerto Rico, two hours from San Juan by car and 20 minutes from Rincón, built around a former US Air Force base that is now the airport (BQN, with direct flights from the US mainland). It is the island's surf and cliff coast: Crash Boat for the postcard, Survival Beach for the rock arches, Wilderness and Gas Chambers for the winter swells, and a limestone shelf you can rappel down in Isabela.
The list below runs from Aguadilla's own beaches east to Isabela and south to Rincón, all within 30 minutes. Tours are booked direct with the operators through the buttons.

1. Crash Boat Beach (Playa Crash Boat)
Named for the Air Force rescue boats once stationed here, Crash Boat is the most photographed beach in the northwest: a long pier with blue pilings, calm clear water in summer, fish under the pier, and food trucks in the lot. Locals jump off the pier; snorkel the pilings early before the boats come in. Winter swells can close it.
2. Clear kayak at Crash Boat
Guided tours on transparent kayaks along the pier and the reef just offshore, where the water is clear enough to watch the fish and turtles under the hull. Morning departures get the glassiest water. Beginners fine; life jackets supplied.

A 20-minute hike from the Borinquen golf course road down a steep trail to a wild beach of sea arches, caves and boulders under the cliffs. No facilities, strong currents, no swimming in winter, and some of the best scenery on the island. Go early, bring water, and keep the tide in mind.
4. Playa Peña Blanca and Playa Borinquen
Two sandy coves north of Crash Boat along the old base road: Peña Blanca is sheltered by a white rock and good for a swim; Borinquen is wider, with the ruins of the old Air Force boat ramp. Both are empty on weekdays.
5. Jobos Beach, Isabela
Twenty minutes east, Jobos is a long surf beach with a reef-protected swimming corner, a strip of bars and restaurants on the sand (Ocean Front, Happy Belly's) and the surf schools. The blowhole at Pozo de Jacinto is at the east end: a sea cave that fires spray through a hole in the rock on big days. Stay back from the edge.
Surf, snorkel and dive
6. Surf Wilderness, Gas Chambers and Surfer's Beach
Aguadilla's reef breaks are the island's heaviest: Gas Chambers below the cliffs (a barrel for experts), Wilderness on the old base (long, powerful), and Surfer's Beach for learners and longboards. Season is October through April. Lessons and rentals run from Surfer's Beach and Jobos.
7. Snorkel the west coast reefs
Rincón's shops run guided shore snorkels on the reefs at Steps Beach and Tres Palmas, the marine reserve 20 minutes south, where elkhorn coral and turtles sit in 10–20 ft of water. Calmest May through October.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Aguadilla from San Juan?
About 80 miles and two hours by car on Route 22. Aguadilla also has its own airport (BQN) with direct flights from several US cities, which is how most people reach the northwest.
Can you swim at Crash Boat Beach?
Yes in summer, when the water is calm and clear; the pier area is a popular swim and snorkel spot. From November to March north swells can make it rough, and the beach sometimes closes. Survival Beach is not safe for swimming at any time.
Where do beginners surf near Aguadilla?
Surfer's Beach in Aguadilla and Jobos Beach in Isabela have the gentlest waves and the surf schools. Wilderness and Gas Chambers are for experienced surfers only. Season runs October to April.
Is Aguadilla or Rincón the better base?
Rincón has more restaurants, nightlife and the whale-watching lighthouse; Aguadilla has the airport, Crash Boat and the cliffs. They are 20 minutes apart, so most visitors stay in one and drive to the other.
