Puerto Rico 5-Day Itinerary: The Complete Trip (2026)

Day 1: Old San Juan

Morning

Start at Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) — the six-level fortress on the headland that defines the San Juan skyline. Walk the ramparts, explore the tunnels, and watch locals flying kites on the lawn. Then head to Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish-built fortification in the Americas, with views across the city.

Afternoon

Walk the blue cobblestone streets. Calle del Cristo for galleries and shops, Calle Fortaleza for the famous umbrella street photo op. Lunch at a local spot — try mofongo (mashed plantains with garlic) and a piña colada at Barrachina, where the drink was invented. Walk the Paseo de la Princesa promenade along the waterfront.

Evening

Full-day commitment but worth it.

Option B: Catamaran to Icacos or Palomino

Half-day catamaran from Fajardo to uninhabited island cays. Snorkeling, swimming, drinks on the boat, lunch included. Less logistics than Culebra, and you're back by early afternoon with time to explore or relax.

Day 4: West Coast — Rincón

Morning: Drive West

Drive from San Juan to Rincón (about 2.5 hours via Highway 22 and Route 2). Check into your west coast hotel or guesthouse. Rincón has a completely different vibe — laid-back surf town, stunning sunsets, smaller crowds.

Afternoon: Beach & Explore

Day 5: Southern Coast or Chill

Option A: Cabo Rojo & Playa Sucia

Drive 45 minutes south to Cabo Rojo. Hike to the Los Morrillos Lighthouse for dramatic cliff views, then descend to Playa Sucia (La Playuela) — a secluded beach framed by cliffs. Stop at the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats — surreal pink-tinged flats that make great photos. This is Puerto Rico at its least touristy.

Option B: Slow Morning in Rincón

Sleep in, grab coffee at a local café, one last beach session at Steps or Sandy Beach, then drive back to San Juan for your flight. The drive back takes about 2.5 hours — plan accordingly.

If driving back via the southern route, detour through Ponce — Puerto Rico's second city. The Plaza Las Delicias is beautifully restored, the Parque de Bombas firehouse is iconic, and the Ponce Museum of Art is the best on the island.
